Taking advantage of WiFi & Internet connectivity for home A/V surveillance, April 6, 2015

This review is from: Lorex Technology LW491HD Wireless Home Monitoring System With 720P Cameras (Electronics)

First, this product is certainly NOT 100% perfect, but simple to install as a "DIY" home surveillance system. It also has many useful features. In fact, for the price, it has several brilliant qualities and provides a lot of bang for the buck. It certainly has features that add value, but still not on par with a "professionally" installedd surveillance system. But, this system was designed to be very simple to install by a non-professional and is certainly more affordable. Anyone who uses a PC would probably be able to install it themself. The setup is really quite simple, and so are instructions provided in the "Quick Install Guide".

I read all the reviews on Lorex's website (nearly 100), plus the downloadable 66 pages in the owner's manual, including all the specs, so I had a full understanding of this system going in. Many of the reviews were quite informative, and the majority were positive. All I can say about some of the less positive reviews is take everything you read online with a grain of salt.

This is a honestly new product from Lorex and on the leading edge of A/V surveillance technology, because it is relies on a "wireless" design. Many other legacy products from Lorex and other manufacturers do not and all their cameras have to have video cables installed to go with them. I wanted a multi camera wireless surveillance designed to reduce the number of wires and cables required for installation. Only for a residence, only a four camera system seems adequate.

Wireless VIDEO in a setup like this has the same limiting factor that streaming HD video has with a HDTV over the Internet. Inadequate wireless bandwidth can cripple even the most expensive home entertainment system. This product is no exception, and in this case even though advertised as an "HD" system, it can only reproduces - at best - 720p video streams. But, for home surveillance, VGA quality at 640 x 480 resolution is plenty excellent enough for clear, discernible live video images.

***CAVEAT EMPTOR*** Lorex recommends high speed Internet access with an upload speed of 1Mbps. That's "UPLOAD", not download speed! Nowadays, most ISP have relatively quick download speeds, but uploads are still sometimes slower by an order of magnitude. Considering this product has remote access to the cameras only via cell phone apps, this is an essential prerequisite.

I must admit the lure of "remote monitoring" on an iPhone or Android mobile device is quite compelling as one of the main advantages in a product like this. The ability to monitor your own home surveillance system while away is very, very desirable. It is the ideal complement to break in door and window burglar alarm system. It is even a useful system if only to monitor pets like dogs and/or cats while your are away from home. Perhaps better still for anyone with teenage residents or boarders at home while you're away. Even the two camera version of this system can be beneficial to monitor your front door to avoid unwanted solicitors, or keep an eye on your car parked in front of the house with an expensive stereo. With four cameras, there are many more possible uses for this system, as well as the two way audio capabilites.

The beauty of a wireless system is there are no A/V cables between the cameras and the wireless "receiver". In this case, the latter is a 9" 800x480 resolution LCD color show provided by Lorex as part of the system. Interconnecting cables can easily add a lot of extra clutter, complexity and cost to an overall system. The largest PITA will be are those "included" cable going to be long enough to serve your all installed camera needs? There are no cables required in a wireless camera system. But, there is no getting away from the need for local AC power receptacles; at least one for each camera as well as the LCD central monitoring unit. For "outdoor" surveillance cameras, AC power receptacles are typically few and far between, so plot accordingly. Otherwise, be prepared for additional headaches during a "DIY" installation. You just might have to call an Electrician to end the job. These indoor/outdoor cameras are not fully weatherproof either, so don't just reckon they can be mounted anywhere outdoors without overhead protection from rain and snow.

I am going to come back to end this review after having installed and used my Lorex LW491HD for awhile. For now, I really like what this system offers and all that it can do for the price - albeit its still far from 100% perfect! Like all multi camera surveilllance systems, as just alluded to, there are tradeoffs during the installation and this system has those tradeoffs too. Where can you locate the cameras, and will your WiFi router have enough signal strength to reach them, and bandwidth to operate all four...

Simple to install and setup. I am pleased with the buy., July 8, 2015

Installation was simple enough although I had to spread it out over 2 weekends; total of 3 hours at top. I installed 3 outdoor cameras and 1 indoor one for the sliding door in the kitchen. The video transmission speed is fantastic for the normal video mode (VGA) but it becomes very choppy for the HD (720p) mode.

Initially I was a bit skeptical about the wireless signal strength since I have 3 cameras were 30-45 feet away from the receiver but it turned out, the signal's strong enough for the receiver to detect the presence of the cameras in no time. Only issues I see so far are the tiny joystick like menu navigator and quality of the software installed on the receiver. The joystick seems to be too sensitive at times and the software tends to lock up occasionally.

The sound is a bit squelch and also choppy but I wasn't expecting to be excellent for how small the speakers were. But the microphone quality isn't terrible and I can hear the bird chirping and distant noise from the passing cars.

I also had a 64GB SD card inserted but it got corrupted in 2nd day with 'format' error and I had to reduce the size to 32GB; I've read a few reviews regarding the same issue on the internet. But, it didn't completely kill the 64GB SD card so I was able to reformat using my laptop.

So far, the devices haven't had any interference with my exiting WIFI connections and other wireless devices including my home security system.

I haven't upgraded the firmware yet and I am now working on to get the cloud connection working to view the video on my hand-held devices. I will update this post once I get the remote video monitoring going.

I received this very quick and neatly packed. Was very pleased with the picture...but have had issues programming the cameras and viewing any video recorded on it...and the sd card keeps coming up with errors. I have been frustrated ever since, will certainly be returning this for a better one. There is really no point having a surveillance camera if you can not capture nor view any recordings.
